2nd Annual Masters Award Dinner                   

MSA will be conveying the Masters Award for Lifetime Achievement to John Henry at a special  catered dinner after the ConFab on September 24th.  This year represents the 10th Anniversary of MSA. With that in mind, MSA wanted to recognize one of our founding members who is also an internationally recognized sculptor. None other than Chattanooga's own, John Henry. The ceremony will be hosted by MSA President Isaac Duncan III, special guest Michael Hall, and others.  Please join us!

                                               

John Henry is known worldwide for his large-scale public works of art, which grace numerous museum, corporate, public and private collections. His works are prominently exhibited in many American cities and states as well as throughout Europe and Asia. His work exhibits a definitive trademark style, recognized internationally. His works range in scale from small tabletop pieces to some of the largest contemporary metal sculptures in the world. John has a supreme commitment to the materiality of his work, and an unwavering insistence on maintaining the integrity of the process and the materials in developing his visual vocabulary.

John attended the University of Kentucky, the University of Chicago and the Art Institute of Chicago, where he received a Ford Foundation grant, the Edward L Ryerson Fellowship and earned a BFA. He received an Honorary Doctor of Arts from the University of Kentucky in 1996. As a visiting professor of sculpture, John has taught at the University of Iowa, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Chicago and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He is formerly Distinguished Professor of Art at Chattanooga State College. In 2002 he received the Governor’s National Award in the Arts from the State of Kentucky and in 2004, the Mayor’s Award of Distinction in the Arts from the City of Chattanooga.  Other recent honors include recognition on the floor of the Tennessee State Senate in 2004 and in 2005 the honorary renaming of North Cermak Road to “John Henry Way” by the City of Chicago in recognition of his contributions to Public Art on the local and national levels.

John was a founding member of ConStruct, the artist-owned gallery that promoted and organized large-scale sculpture exhibitions throughout the United States. John continues to curate exhibitions in the United States and in Europe; drawing on his nationally recognized expertise regarding sculptors and their work. He is now the Curator of the Outdoor Museum of Art at Chattanooga State College, Chattanooga, Tennessee. 

Michael Hall is an artist, author, curator at the Ohio Museum,  Professor Emeritus at Cranbrook Academy, well-known collector and critic in the fields of folk art and American Scene painting.  The Hall Collection of American Folk Art is on permanent display at the Milwaukee Art Museum. As an artist, Michael Hall has held numerous solo exhibitions in both the U.S. and Canada.  His sculpture has been included in exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, the Walker Art Center, The Detroit Institute of Arts and the Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art.  For his work as an artist, Mr. Hall has been awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and two Michigan Arts Council awards for Creative Artists.  He has also been awarded several public sculpture commissions.

Michael Hall and John Henry have been friends and contemporaries since the 1960's. Hall will regale guests with stories and images from Henry's long and illustrious career, highlighting his unusual approach to success. MSA is honored to have him join us for this special event!

The Masters Award Dinner will be held at the 212 Market Restaurant located in downtown Chattanooga. Travel + Leisure Magazine declared Market 212 the "best farm-to-table restaurant in Tennessee" and Wine Spectator has bestowed its Award for Excellence to Market 212 every year since 1999.  There are two dinner selections for you to choose from, beer and wine options* as well as a variety of sweets to finish the meal.  The only decision you need to make in advance is which option you would prefer for your dinner. 

1.     Pesto Springer Mountain Chicken, parmesan polenta, local summer squash, tomato caper vinaigrette (this is a gluten free option)

2.    September Summer Vegetable Plate, local farm bounty  (vegetarian)

Limited parking available in the restaurant’s private parking lot. Metered street parking available on Market St. and other nearby streets. Free 2-hr street parking on Cherry St. Other paid parking available in the Carta North Garage and lots near the Tennessee Aquarium and Unum.

*Please note that your dinner will include 2 servings of either beer or wine.  For any other alcoholic beverages there is an extensive cash bar available.
